President Jiang Zemin said yesterday that China will actively support any move that helps peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with Lee Han-dong, the prime minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK), who has been on a working visit to China since Tuesday.
Jiang said any move conducive to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula will have China's support.
The Chinese side hopes that the relaxation process on the peninsula will continue and China will make efforts towards that end, Jiang stressed.
The Chinese people, just like people in other parts of the world, welcome and appreciate positive changes on the Korean Peninsula following the historic summit meeting between the two sides, he said.
Lee said the ROK side is grateful to the Chinese side for its understanding and support of the efforts of the two sides on the Korean Peninsula to realize reconciliation.
The ROK prime minister extended greetings and regards from ROK President Kim Dae-jung to Jiang.
