Rebels wearing army uniforms killed at least 23 people, including civilians, in a raid on an army camp and a bus in India's revolt-racked Kashmir on Tuesday, a defence official said.
The dead included three attackers, at least one soldier and several family members of soldiers on the base, said the official, who asked not to be named. He added the fighting was continuing.
At least 56 people were injured and Jammu and Kashmir state Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said the death toll could go much higher.
"The number may go over 50. The real tally may be more than that," he told Star News television.
