HK Flower Show Attendance Hits Record High

The 2002 Hong Kong Flower Show, organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, has attracted a record high of more than 206,000 visitors during the past three days, a government release said Monday.

It represents an increase of 20 percent compared with the corresponding period last year.

Chairman of the Flower Show Organizing Committee Cheung Yiu-fai said that almost 100,000 people visited the showground on Sunday alone, recording a 47 percent increase over the previous year.

"This is attributed to the colorful floral displays, rich fringe activities, inexpensive admission fees and the fine weather, " he said.

The flower show has attracted 110 participating organizations comprising 76 local horticultural associations, 34 organizations from the Chinese Mainland and countries like Holland, South Africa and Thailand, as well as 10 government departments.

Horticultural products are also on sale at 70 commercial stalls at the showground.

About 30 fringe activities have been arranged for visitors including horticultural seminars, floral arrangement demonstrations, entertaining cultural performances throughout the show period, and children's Happy Wonderland over the weekend.

The show will be open to the public until next Sunday.
