The city's gardening authorities expect more than 300,000 people to visit a flower exhibition and market to be operated at People's Park near People's Square during the Chinese lunar New Year.
The show, which will run from Sunday to February 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, will display and sell more than 400 types of flowers. Admission is 15 yuan (US$1.81).
More than 400,000 flowers including hyacinths, cyclamens and tree peonies from China, Europe and Japan will be displayed in a 4,000-square-meter greenhouse that was built as part of the park's recent renovation, the Shanghai Gardening Administration Bureau said.
"This year, we invited 40 companies to promote the idea that flowers should be purchased for use as holiday decorations," said Chen Min, the bureaus vice director.
With 20 percent discounts and free delivery, residents in the city also can buy flowers from the market over a hot line (6472-6135) during the Spring Festival holiday.
