Some 8.34 million people of Taiwan, or 37.5 percent of the population in the island, are Internet users, reported Taiwan's media Saturday.
The survey, conducted by the telecommunications authorities in March this year, indicates an increase of Internet users in the island, compared to the 20.1 percent recorded in a similar survey conducted in January 1999.
Seventy-seven percent of the respondents said they used the Internet at home the most, followed by 35 percent who said they access the Internet from schools or research institutes and 30 percent who said they use their company office.
About 13 percent of the respondents said they use Internet cafes, up 9.2 percent over the January 1999 level.
In Taipei, 56.4 percent of the citizens are Internet users, followed by Kaohsiung with 41.8 percent, according to the survey results.
