The Chinese Atlanta Olympic champion overwhelmed her Japanese opponent two minutes 35 seconds into the final for an ippon.
Sun was also the open class silver medallist in the 1995 worlds and over 72kg bronze medallist in the 1997 world championships.
The bronze medal went to Karina Bryant of Britain and Tea Donguzashvili of Russia, who defeated Cuba's Daima Beltran and Sandra Koeppen of Germany, respectively.
