Complaints by the public about poor quality products and services declined greatly during the week-long Labor Day holiday that ended yesterday, industrial and commercial officials said.
Youth Daily reported today the Shanghai Consumers' Association received some 130 complaints in the past week, 283 percent less than during the seven-day Spring Festival this year.
Officials said the reduced number resulted from improved management and order in the local tourism market.
Industrial and commercial authorities assigned more than 3,000 officers to inspect more than 10,000 travel agencies, shops, restaurants and other businesses. Some 100 unlicensed businesses were closed down.
Officials said among all complaints, those about substandard electric appliances, food and shoes topped the numbers. Many others complained about the inconvenience of buying tickets in crowded scenic spots.
More than 3 million domestic and foreign tourists visited Shanghai during the golden week, 3.75 percent up from the same period last year, tourism officials said.
