Ivory Pagoda in the Palace Museum of Beijing
The ivory pagoda is part of a large ivory carving called Birthday Congratulations from the Celestial. The miniature pagoda, hills, pavilions and other buildings, all carved from ivory, form a picturesque model garden. The pagoda has thirteen storeys, entirely in the style of wooden structures. The columns, doors, windows, eaves and balustrades are all depicted in detail. Little bells hang from the corners of the upturned eaves. Figurines are on every storey of the pagoda, some walking along the verandas, some sitting inside, looking at the view outside, some leaning on the balustrades as if deep in thought, and some coming out of the pagoda. The pagoda, about a meter in height and all white except for its scarlet steeple, looks dazzlingly brilliant among the miniature hills, pavilions, trees, flowers and people.
