Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan underscored the importance of the construction of a pipeline network for crude oil and natural gas here on Wednesday, saying China should further guarantee its resources security.
Zeng spoke at a meeting of the State Council that discussed planning for the network. He said that a "scientific schedule is essential to avoid repeated construction" and urged planners to ensure that the pipeline network and other transportation measures could be connected.
"China should step up the exploration of domestic resources, which is vital to energy independence. Overseas cooperation is also encouraged," Zeng said.
He also expressed hope that the project would stimulate innovation and boost related industries such as metallurgy, construction materials and machinery.
