Telling China's Stories

At the National Publicity and Ideological Work Conference in August 2013, Xi Jinping indicated that we must do a better job of “telling China’s stories.” He is not only the advocate, but also the lead practitioner of this idea. As he interacts with people of other countries, Xi effectively conveys to the outside world China’s views and positions, telling stories that warm people’s hearts and bring the Chinese people and people of other countries closer.

These stories tell how China’s history and culture advance, how China has forged ahead with its reform and development, and how China is involved in global governance. The most exciting story in China today is the extensive efforts that the Chinese people are making to achieve the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation. To tell China’s stories and convey China’s voice effectively, we must make sure that we tell stories that people want to hear and are able to understand, stories that they feel they want to respond to, and stories that resonate with their own life.

China is now making a greater effort to increase its international outreach by promoting the integrated development of traditional and emerging media and building up a discourse system that is capable of effective international communication.
