Charles Frazier and Cold Mountain

In 1999, the work Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier (b. 1950) won America's National Book Award. The book was published in 1997 by New York's Atlantic Monthly Press. It was Frazier's first novel. As soon as it was released, Cold Mountain proved to be a huge success, and stayed in The New York Times bestseller list for 45 weeks straight.

Set at the end of the American Civil War, the book tells a soldier's torturous journey home from the battlefield to be with his love. In December 2003, the adapted film Cold Mountain was first released to the public, and later it was introduced into China.

In Chinese translation, the names of the film and novel were both directly translated to "Leng Shan." But Frazier had included a quotation from the poet Han Shan (whose name literally means "cold mountain") on his novel's title page: "When a man seeks the way to Cold Mountain, he finds the road is closed." The line encapsulates the hopeless longing of the novel's hero for a life of happiness.
