BRICS Countries

BRICS is an acronym based on the English names of the five countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In 2006, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China met for the first time, marking the beginning of BRIC cooperation. In June 2009, the BRIC leaders held their first meeting in Russia, upgrading BRIC cooperation to summit level. In 2011, South Africa officially became a member, expanding BRIC to five members and changing its name to BRICS. In August 2023, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Argentina, Iran and Ethiopia were invited to join the the BRICS cooperation mechanism. BRICS countries are representatives of emerging economies, and they safeguard the interests of developing countries in global economic governance. In BRICS cooperation, China has always adhered to the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation. As an unswerving builder of and contributor to BRICS cooperation, China has worked with the other BRICS countries to jointly promote the group's high-quality development.

Today, BRICS countries engage in multi-level result-oriented cooperation in dozens of fields including economics and trade, finance, science and technology, agriculture, culture, education, health, think tanks, and sister cities through a framework led by the BRICS Summit and supported by ministerial meetings such as the Meeting of BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues and the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The BRICS has become a major force to boost world economic growth, improve global governance, and promote democratization of international relations.
