Hu Jintao reelected CPC chief

Hu Jintao was elected here on Monday as the chief of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for the second term at the first plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee.

Members of the newly elected Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 17th CPC Central Committee are Hu Jintao, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang.

During Hu's previous tenure as general secretary of the 16th CPC Central Committee beginning November 2002, Hu and his eight colleagues of the Politburo Standing Committee, the pinnacle of CPC leadership, went all out to promote the scientific outlook on development on the basis of social harmony, environmental protection and energy conservation in addition to economic expansion.

The outlook has been newly incorporated into the Party's Constitution which also enshrined Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of Three Represents.

At this plenum, Hu Jintao was also named chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Military Commission.

On behalf of the members of the newly elected central leading organs, Hu said while meeting press that he would rely firmly on all other Party members and the people of all ethnic groups, and earnestly accomplish the tasks set at the 17th Congress.

"We will do our best to be worthy of the great trust the entire membership have placed in us and to live up to the expectations of the people of all ethnic groups," he said.

He said that development would remain the Party's top priority in governing and rejuvenating the country, press ahead with reform and opening up and put in place systems and mechanisms that are full of vigor, highly efficient, more open and conducive to scientific development.

"We will firmly uphold the purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly, persist in building the Party for public interests and exercising governance for the people, spare no effort to solve the most specific problems of the utmost and immediate concern to the people, sincerely do practical work for their benefits, and strive to promote social equity and justice," He said.

A native of Jixi County, Anhui Province, Hu was born in December 1942 and enrolled by Qinghua University in 1959 and graduated from the Hydraulic Engineering Department later.

He first became an alternate member and then member of the 12th CPC Central Committee, and has been a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee since 1992.
