TO celebrate International Women's Day, a special gala show, including displays of cheongsam (qipao) fashions over the years and performances of golden melodies from the Shanghai of the 1930s, will be staged March 7 for a female audience.
Li Xiafang, the costume designer for the gala, believes that cheongsam is the fashion style which best shows off the beauty of Chinese women.
"Cheongsam is good at highlighting slender figures and it is especially suitable for the Shanghai temperament. So it is the theme of the show," Li said.
The show is divided into five episodes and the audience will see the great variety of cheongsam styles both for daily life and for grand occasions.
The music and songs of bygone Shanghai will be performed by popular stars including Shen Qun and Zhang Qing.
Chu Baojie, spokesman of the show, said: "In the last episode, the latest cheongsam fashions will be displayed together with a 10-meter-long scarf."
