"The Magic Flute," a transnationally-produced opera, made a scene in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Friday night and touched open the month-long Macao International Music Festival (MIMF).
The masterpiece of Mozart was conducted by Robert Swedberg of the Orlando Opera Co. of the United States and jointly staged by the China National Opera Theater Chorus and the Italian International Orchestra.
Renowned Chinese soprano Huang Ying and Chinese-born tenor Warren Mok acted as the lovely princess Pamina and the handsome prince Tamino.
Considered as the "flagship" of every year's MIMF, which has come to its 17th year, the annual Macao production of operas has earned an international reputation. The "Flute" this year was most appealing to the audience with its florid costume design and an enchanting blend of pure comedy and high drama. Another two shows of the opera will be made in the next two days.
The opera will be followed by a series of performances by world famous troupes, such as Vienna Boys Choir, the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg and the National Chorus of South Korea.
Charles Lam, director of Special Projects Department with the Macao Cultural Institute, said that eight performances will be set at a number of European-style churches, which are historical relics in Macao to give the audience an aesthetic treat.
