A textbook on sex education catering for youth in China, the first of its kind in China's coastal city of Shenzhen, was rejected by the schools, Guangzhou Daily reported.

Centering on sensitive topics such as masturbation, sexual harassment and homosexuality, the textbook drew great attention since its debut in 2003.

However, after trying out in 24 local schools in 2004, the book received a silent feedback. Most of the textbooks were unsold from its initial print of 20,000 copies.

The context is not suitable for teaching in classes, a school medical officer surnamed Xie was quoted as saying.

Xie has been a school medical officer for 6 years and now works in an elementary school in Yantian district.

Several parents even sued the textbook for its colorized illustrations of genitals, the report said.

The textbook has three versions separately for elementary school, junior high school and senior high school students.

Simple explanations of contraception and precaution for sexual harassment are included in the textbook for elementary students about 10 years old, while textbook for students between 12 to 15 of age talk about symptoms of sex development such as menstrual flow and masturbation.

In face of public rejection, Zhang Ling, one of the chief editors for the textbook, says that the lack of professional educators on sex education is the key issue.

"We do not have established authorities in this field in China, nor do we have guidelines for composing such books." Zhang says.

"We are expecting new pushing polices to improve the current situation." she added.
