The group comprises 440,000 people, with the majority living in the Wuchuan Gelao-Miao Autonomous County and the Daozhen Gelao-Miao Autonomous County, Guizhou Province, and the rest scattered in Yunnan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Gelao people generally use their own spoken language and the Han Chinese script.
