Dark Horse Candidate Crowned Miss Hong Kong

Kayi Cheung was crowned Miss Hong Kong on Saturday night, creating the biggest surprise in this year's contest.

Kayi Cheung, the 23-year-old college student from Vancouver, Canada won her title by virtue of average and steady scores, although not proving outstanding in any single round of the final competition.

Grace Wong from the United States placed second, and was titled "Miss Photogenic" and "Miss International Goodwill". Nineteen-year- old Loretta Chow came in third.

The Miss Hong Kong pageant is an annual beauty event organized by the leading Hong Kong television station TVB since 1973.

In its history of 24 years, the contest has given birth to some of the brightest stars and actresses in Hong Kong, including Maggie Cheung (second-place winner in 1983), Michelle Lee (winner in 1988) and Anita Yuen (winner in 1990).
