China
encourages its entrepreneurs to help the UN protect the environment, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhang Ming said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the launch of a flamingo conservation program, a project financially supported by Chinese billionaire Luo Hong, Zhang said: "Luo Hong is a pioneer in this area. He deserves the commendation and encouragement of all."

Bakery mogul Luo is also a photographer and environmentalist. He has donated more than 10 million yuan ($1.3 million) to the UN Environment Program (UNEP), of which 1 million yuan will be used for flamingo protection.

The flamingo conservation program began with a two-day workshop to develop strategies to increase the number of the birds in the Rift Valley lakes of Kenya.

At the workshop, the ambassador said China has a long-term cooperative relationship with the UNEP, World Wilde Fund for Nature (WWF) and other international environmental organizations in various fields.

"China is ready to do its utmost to protect our common land." Zhang said.
