The Chinese government will continue to carry out its sustainable development strategy, and pursue basic harmony between people and nature, according to a new government report.
The National Report on Sustainable Development released by the Chinese government on Wednesday says China will continue to focus on people, pursue harmony between people and nature, center around core economic growth, keep improving national strength and competitiveness and push forward all-round, sustainable development of the economy, society, population, resources and the environment.
The report is issued for the World Summit on Sustainable Development to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 26 to September 4.
The Chinese government has achieved sustained, rapid and healthy economic growth through applying the sustainable development strategy, the report says.
China has developed a legal system of sustainable development and improved law enforcement.
The Chinese government has set great store by implementing the sustainable growth strategy as its blueprint for social and economic development. In the Ninth Five-year Plan, sustainable development was one of the major strategies in the country's modernization drive.
From 1996 to 2000, the government invested 380 billion yuan (US$46 billion) in ecological development and environmental protection, 2.75 times more than investment in the 1991-1995 period.
The Tenth Five-year Plan has set phase targets for sustainable development in all sectors. It also includes special plans for key projects in ecological development and environmental protection.
