Environmental and resources conservation committees across China have done a great deal in thepast five years to protect the environment and to maintain ecological balance, said China's top legislator.
In his letter addressed to a national seminar on the protection of environment and resources, held from December 19 through 20, Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), praised the work of the committees working under the direction of legislatures of various levels.
Li said that China is now committed to a sustained development strategy, and he expressed his hope that the delegates attending the seminar will draw valuable lessons from the past five years' work in order to be able to discuss and enhance environmental protection efforts.
Zou Jiahua, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said at the seminar that committees at all levels should focus more on environmental protection legislation and sources. Qu Geping, chiefof the NPC Environmental and Resources Protection Committee, presented a summary of the committee's work over the past five years.
