One US soldier was killed Sunday in a clash with insurgents northeast of Baghdad, the US military said in a statement.
A soldier assigned to Task Force Lightning received small-arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in the volatile Diyala province, the statement said.
At least 3,120 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the US-led war on Iraq broke out in March 2003, according to media count.
