The United States reiterated on Tuesday its opposition to the two-month recess plan by the Iraqi parliament this summer and said the plan would not be the right step.

"Our very clear view, which I know we have passed along to the Iraqi government in other channels, is that a two-month long recess this summer might not be the right step or it might not send the right signal to the Iraqi people about the importance and urgency of passing the legislation that they have before them," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

McCormack said that everybody agrees that Iraq's insurgency has to be addressed via security forces and military means, and part of addressing that is to pass the legislation. "And the Iraqi government needs to do so with a focused effort and really meet the objectives that they have laid out for themselves," he said.

The United States has voiced opposition to the two-month recess plan by the Iraqi parliament and said it is sending "the wrong signal" to the Iraqi people as well as the world.
