Du Shaozhong
Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Administration
Du’s main focus is public participation in environmental protection. He initiated an Environmental Protection Information program to mobilize citizens to report on pollution in the urban areas such as excessive dust from construction sites, vehicle emissions and industrial chimneys belching black smoke. As an advocate of the “For One More Blue Sky Day, Drive One Day Less a Month,” Du, who is in his 50s, makes the 70-minute walk from his home to his office in a bid to encourage more people to join the program. Since the launch of the program in May 2006, the number of private car owner participants in Beijing now exceeds 100,000.
