Hong Kong action star, Jackie Chan's The Myth topped last weekend box office, taking in 26.5 million yuan across the nation on its debut weekend.
The film received 8 million yuan in box office takings on its first day, the best takings for all the films in cinemas this year. It breaks the 7 million yuan debut day record that two films Initial D and Seven Swords set earlier this year. It is also the biggest success for a Jackie Chan film in recent years.
Jackie Chan and the film's director, Stanley Tong, will stage a celebration for the movie in Guangzhou tonight.
The film's publicist, Yu Dong, said they are confident that the film will set a new box office record during the upcoming National Holiday.
The Myth is a US$20 million coproduction of Chan's film company and the China Film Group Corporation.
