The just ended fifth plenary session of the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) called for narrowing income gap and building a harmonious society.
It urged reform and adjustment of the distribution system to narrow the widening gap in the distribution of income between areas and between some segments of society. It also called for solving internal conflicts in a correct way and earnestly tackling issues that have a direct bearing on the interests of the people.
Meanwhile, the session called for creating more jobs and establishing a social security system that is in line with the nation's level of economic development.
The insurance systems which cover pensions, medical care, employment, work incidents and births should be further improved and the social protection of migrant workers should be solved properly, the session said.
Efforts should also focus on perfecting and reforming the public health system and establishing a new rural cooperative medical care system, the session said.
It noted that China should keep population growth at a low level and improve the quality of new births.
The four-day meeting discussed and approved a proposal by the CPC Central Committee on the 11th Five-year Guidelines (2006-2010) for China's economic and social development.
