The museum is the information center of modern Chinese literature. It performs the researching and exchanging functions as a literature museum, a literature library, and literature archives. The museum's collection covers a wide range.
The new literatures in 20th century are mostly included in its collection, such as works and materials in Chinese from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and abroad. The museum now houses over 300,000 items of collection, among which there are 190,000 books, 2100 kinds of magazine (90,000 volumes), 142 kinds of newspaper, 10,970 manuscripts, 8,282 photos, 7,887 letters, 453 tapes, 773 video cassettes and 2,959 cultural relics. As for those literature materials donated by some writers, libraries named after their donators are set up.
Currently there are 55 libraries, including libraries of Ba Jin, Bin Xin, Tang Tao, Zhang Tianyi, Zhou Yang, Yu Pingbo, Ding Ling, Xia Yan, A Ying, Xiao Jun, Yao Xueyin, Xiao Qian, Zhang Guangnian, and Liu Baiyu etc.
