Missing Hongkongers Confirmed Safe in Sri Lanka, Maldives

Cai Zhiyuan, an official with the immigration department of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, said Monday that all Hongkongers missing in tsunami-hit Sri Lanka, Maldives were confirmed safe.

Cai said their rescue team will not leave here at the moment till there are no new missing people registered in Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Cai, among the four-member special task force assigned by the HKSAR government, arrived Wednesday to clinch the whereabouts of all missing Hongkongers in Sri Lanka and the Maldives during the tsunami tragedy.

The rescue team Friday brought back one holding HKSAR passport and one holding passport of China from the southern port city of Matara.

A list of 24 missing people holding HKSAR passports was reported on Dec. 29, 2005.
