Meng Xuenong was appointed vice governor and acting governor of north China's Shanxi Province on Monday.
The appointment was made at the 32th session of the 10th Shanxi Provincial People's Congress, the local legislature, held in Taiyuan.
Meng, born in August 1949, is a native of Penglai, east China's Shandong Province. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in July 1972.
He was elected mayor of Beijing in January 2003 and resigned in April the same year. He was appointed deputy director of the Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Construction Committee of the State Council in September 2003.
On August 30 this year, Meng was appointed vice secretary of the CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee.
He is now a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee and a deputy of the 10th National People's Congress.
Monday's meeting also accepted Yu Youjun's resignation as governor of Shanxi.
