The State Council held a plenary meeting Tuesday to discuss the draft of a government work report to be delivered at the forthcoming fifth annual conference of the Ninth National People's Congress.
Premier Zhu Rongji presided over the meeting and said that new and great achievements have been made in the country's reform, opening-up and modernization drive over the past year, under the correct leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with Jiang Zemin at the core.
He stressed that this year is very important for the nation. Efforts must be made to expand domestic demand for further economic growth and to promote economic restructuring.
The country should try to meet the new situation created by China's accession to the World Trade Organization by opening wider to the outside world.
He called for greater efforts to rectify the domestic economic order, promote scientific and technological advance and education, further streamline the government's functions and wipe out any corruption from government.
