At its 53rd executive meeting on Wednesday, the State Council approved, in principle, the drafts of the law on citizens' identity cards (IC) and the bill on the amendment of inspection on export and import goods.
Premier Zhu Rongji presided over the meeting.
The meeting said it is necessary to further regularize and improve the current IC system, based on the Provisions for Identity Cards of Residents which was enacted in 1985.
To meet the new situation created by China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) the meeting agreed to amend and improve the existing law on inspection of exports and imports.
After further revisions, the two drafts will be handed over to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for discussion and approval.
