As part of its new China strategy, Norway will open a new consulate general in Guangzhou in southern China, in addition to the embassy in Beijing and consulate general in Shanghai, said reports reaching Stockholm on Thursday.
"We are moving further into mainland China. This will give us a foothold in southern China, and a presence that will make it easier to help Norwegians who have an interest in this area," said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere in a press release from the Foreign Ministry.
"Increased diplomatic presence in China is an important tool in the new China strategy. We already have two missions, but in a country such as this, where developments are so rapid, it is important to constantly consider whether we are present where our interests really are," the foreign minister said.
"In addition, we are increasing our staff in China. There is room for a stronger presence in China. We have been building this up over time, and we will continue to do so," said Mr Stoere.
