Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met in Beijing Wednesday afternoon the delegation of All-Africa Association for Chinese Reunification, speaking highly of the contributions made by overseas Chinese to China's reunification.
The delegation was headed by Donald Wong.
Qian told his guest that the reunification of the motherland is one of the three major tasks facing the Chinese people in the new century, and also a sacred mission for the Chinese nation, including Taiwan people and overseas Chinese.
Chen Shui-bian's splitting remark of "one country on each side" and his proposed "referendum" is similar to the "state-to-state" remarks by his predecessor Lee Teng-hui, Qian said.
Chen's statement has set new obstructions to the cross-Straits relations, causing unsteadiness in Taiwan society and troubles in international community, and so was widely criticized by Chinese at home and abroad and international public opinion as well, Qian added.
Qian pointed out that pursuing peace, development and stability is the mainstream opinion in Taiwan and any attempt defying the "one-China" principle is doomed to failure, Qian said.
