Hackers Deface US State Department Web Site
One of US State Department's web sites was temporarily shut down after the main page was defaced by unidentified hackers on October 2, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Thursday.

The hacked web site, usinfo.state.gov, was run by the department's Bureau of International Information Programs, and "largely directed at foreign audiences," Boucher told a regular press briefing.

He added that the department's main site, www.state.gov, remains open, and most embassy sites from overseas are not affected.

The affected site was hosted by a server outside the State Department and no sensitive or classified information was ever in danger. A State Department team was investigating the incident.

"It's not possible to surmise any intent of the intruders beyond vandalism at this point," said Boucher.
