Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Sergey Lavrov said Monday that weapons inspections in Iraq are going on well and chances for peacefully disarming Iraq of its banned weapons remain.
"The memorandum explains why and how (inspections) could effectively continue on the basis of existing resolutions," Lavrov told reporters after the UN Security Council met on a draft resolution seeking war permit, proposed by the United States, Britain and Spain, and a challenging joint memorandum, by France, Russia and Germany.
"We don't think that the chance for peaceful disarmament for Iraq has been missed," he said.
"We are convinced, on the contrary, that the inspections are proceeding effectively, and Iraq is responding to the demands of the international community and the pressure exerted on it."
He noted that the trend of peaceful disarmament should continue on the basis of the unity of the 15-member Security Council.
