FM Spokesman: New Government to Adhere to One-China Policy
The incoming new Chinese government will adhere to the "one-China" stance and maintain the present policy towards Taiwan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said in Beijing Thursday.

At the same time it would promote economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits, said Kong.

Kong said Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Premiere Zhu Rongji had made clear statements on the issue in the report of the Chinese Communist Party's 16th National Congress and the government's working report respectively.

China would continue to put its hope in the Taiwanese people and to push for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Kong said.

Kong said during the process of rejuvenation, China hoped nations that forged diplomatic ties with China adhered to the "one-China" policy and handled their relationships with Taiwan properly.
