A Chinese weapons inspector Yu Jianxing has been confirmed dead after a car accident in Iraq Thursday afternoon, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan in Beijing Friday.

Kong said the Foreign Ministry was informed of the accident Thursday night and the Chinese government expressed condolences and sympathy to the inspector's family.

Quoting a notice from the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), Kong said Yu Jianxing, a chemical weapons specialist, was seriously injured in a car accident which occurred during an inspection task Thursday afternoon and the UNMOVIC immediately sent him to a hospital by helicopter.

However, Yu died of his injuries soon after arriving at hospital, Kong said.

Yu took part in UN inspections several times and made a great contribution to the work, said Kong, adding that the Chinese government was working with the United Nations to deal with the formalities of the accident and his death.
