An exhibition of photographs taken for America's National Geographic Society over the past 100 years has opened at Beijing's Millennium Altar.
Two hundred and fifteen photos have been specially selected by the magazine to showcase a wide range of subjects such as natural spectacles, wildlife, environmental pollution, war and human adventures. Each image has an accompanying introduction in both Chinese and English.
Of the photos being exhibited, 100 are from Michael Yamashita, the magazine's famed photographer who spent three years traveling across 10 countries to China in the footsteps of the Venetian explorer, Marco Polo. His photos aim at retracing Polo's journey to China 700 years ago and, according to Yamashita, produce evidence that Polo really did make the trip.
This is the largest scale National Geographic exhibition yet held in China, and will last two months from November this year to January 2004.
