At Least 35 Killed by Rebels in Northern Uganda

Rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony killed at least 35 people and wounded 18 others in their attack on a camp for internally displaced persons in northern Uganda on Thursday evening, local media reported Saturday.

Over 100 rebels wearing the uniforms of the government troops entered the camp in Gulu district and started to kill the people, survivors said.

A survivor, who is in Gulu hospital nursing a broken leg, said 35 bodies were recovered from the camp housing about 25,000 people displaced by the war.

Another survivor said most of the dead have bullet injuries all over their bodies and other have broken limbs.

Local security sources said that at least two government soldiers were killed and some others were reportedly missing.

This is the third time since 2002 the rebels attacked the place.

The rebels have been fighting an 18-year-old war to topple the Ugandan government dominated by southerners, ad claiming to give power to the northern Acholi tribe.

But the rebel have killed tens of thousands of civilians, abducted over 20,000 children as their porters, fighters and sex slaves and displaced more than 1.5 million people, most of whom are from Acholi tribe.

Since March this year the government forces has been pursuing the rebels in southern Sudan to flush them out after securing a green light from the Khartoum government.
