The capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province Shenyang plans to invest almost six billion yuan in afforestation this year, doubling last year's figure.
According to the plan, the city will plant trees along local expressways, highways and railways, as well as in urban areas.
Meanwhile, the city will launch 10 major environmental projects, including facilities to handle solid and liquid wastes, and upgrading the heating network by dismantling 1,000 chimneys and 400 boilers.
According to local officials, the city will invest a total of 30 billion yuan in urban development in the coming five years. The old industrial base is expected to become an environmental model for the whole country within three years, they said.
