Education of various types and at all levels witnessed
comprehensive development. In 2001, regular institutions of higher learning
in China enrolled 2.68 million new students, 480,000 more than those recruited
in 2000, with the number of active students totaling 7.19 million. The adult
higher education institutions enrolled 1.96 million new students, having
4.56 million active students. There were 390,000 graduate stude graduate
students in the universities and institutions that offered courses leading
to postgraduate degrees, including 170,000 new entrants, 40,000 more than
those enrolled in 2000. The enrollment of senior secondary schools reached
14.05 million, including 5.58 million new entrants. There were 11.64 million
students in secondary vocational or technical schools of various types,
including 3.98 million new entrants. Junior secondary schools enrolled 65.14
million students, including 22.88 million new entrants. Pupils enrolled
in regular primary schools numbered 125.43 million, with 19.44 million new
entrants. There were 390,000 students in special education schools, with
60,000 new entrants, and 20.22 million kids in kindergartens. Adult technical
training schools trained 92.7 million persons.
