In 2001, China, together with Russia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, announced the establishment of the
Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which is a new type of regional cooperative
organization where security is pursued through mutual trust and cooperation
through mutual benefit. Cooperative relations between China and ASEAN (Association
of Southeast Asian Nations) members were constantly expanded. China and
ASEAN nations affirmed their key cooperation fields in the new century at
the Fifth ASEAN and China (10+1) Leaders Meeting, and agreed to establish
a China-ASEAN free trade zone in the coming decade, which is of far-reaching
significance to the long-term development of bilateral ties and regional
prosperity.
