Yangzhong City of east China's Jiangsu Province, a prosperous island city in the Yangtze River, started construction on its second bridge spanning the Yangtze on Saturday.
Sources with the local government said the new 1,761 meter bridge will connect the island to Changzhou City on the southern side of the river.
Total investment for the project is estimated at 180 million yuan (about US$21.69 million). The bridge is expected to be opened to traffic by August 2004.
With a land area of 228 square kilometers, Yangzhong is the second largest island in the Yangtze River and home to 300,000 people.
The city built its first bridge over the Yangtze River, which links the island to Zhenjiang City on the southern side of the river, in 1992. City officials have expressed their hope that the second bridge will boost commercial activity with the booming economic area in south Jiangsu and Shanghai.
