The shanghai Health Supervision Institute kicked off a citywide inspection of restaurants, supermarkets and food manufacturing facilities yesterday in order to guarantee the city has a "clean and safe food supply" during the Spring Festival holiday.
The campaign will run through February 10.
"Traditionally, Spring Festival is a time of reunion for local families, and large amounts of food are consumed. Our focus is guaranteeing a qualified food supply," said Gu Zhenghua, a spokesman for the institute.
The checks will focus on manufacturers of deli goods, cakes, tonics, edible oils, seasoning and fried melon seeds, which are all popular snacks during the festival.
Inspectors will also visit hotels and restaurants serving Nianyefan - the traditional Chines New Year's Eve dinner on January 31.
Any restaurant serving the meal is required to report to the institute, which will conduct spot inspections.
Last year, the institute inspected 661,765 public facilities ranging from hotels to beauty parlors. It withdrew business licenses from 21 companies, and fined 11,118 firms a total of 14.8 million yuan (US$1.8 million)
In addition, a total of 492,954 food manufacturers, distributors, retailers, canteens and snack stalls were inspected last year, with 13.2 million yuan worth of fines levied against unsanitary operations
