Some monasteries in Sichuan Province, such as Wenshu Temple, have started using anti-counterfeit machines to detect fakes in donation money, reports Tianfu Morning Post.
According to a monk in the renowned Zhaojue Temple in Chengdu, 28 fake notes with a face value of 2,800 yuan (US$340) were detected during the traditional Spring Festival.
Some crooked donors offer fake notes and leave with authentic change money from the temple, causing huge economic losses, said the monk. (chinawestnews.net February 13, 2004)
