Beijing will have 1,000 kilometers of public bus lanes by 2020, including express lines between large residential communities and commercial areas, according to the Beijing Municipal Transportation Commission.

At present, multiple transformation projects are underway to rehabilitate the city's transport infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion.

Transportation authorities said Beijing is going to be covered by a modernized transportation network that is green and efficient in 2020. At that time, the city's rail transit network will reach 900 kilometers, capable of taking on 8 million more commuters per day. By 2035, the total length of the rail transit system in Beijing, including suburban railroads, will grow to 2,500 kilometers.

For ground traffic, the current 851 kilometers of public bus lanes will be increased to 1,000 kilometers in 2020, and express lines will be developed to connect key areas such as Zhongguancun and the central business district to major residential communities.

For bicycle traffic, the existing 600 kilometers of interconnected bikeways will be extended to 3,200 kilometers in 2020. Metro stations will be equipped with more bicycle parking lots to make shared bikes available in the vicinity.

In addition to expanding the city's transportation system, a number of reconstruction projects are also in progress as counter measures to traffic jam in Beijing. Busy thoroughfares such as the Beijing-Tongzhou expressway and important urban junctions will be transformed to prevent congestion and avoid traffic accidents.

From Nov. 28, Beijing Metro Line 15 -- the only metro line connecting Shunyi New Town to the downtown area, is going to offer extra trains during morning rush hours by shortening departure intervals. The new way of operation will boost the metro line's capacity by 9.6 percent and improve the travel experience for commuters.
