Residents in the Japanese prefecture of Shiga will be charged fees for using plastic shopping bags from April, local press reported on Wednesday.

The eco-friendly Japanese prefecture will widely introduce the measure aiming to simply reduce the amount of waste from the region, and nearly 150 shops or supermarkets are expected to join in the new system, which will collect around 5 yen per bag according to the country's public broadcaster Nippon Hoso Kyokai ( NHK).

The report said the prefecture will next month conclude written agreements accepting the new scheme with more than 20 firms and retailers which are opening those stores in the prefecture.

Yasuo Araki, a spokesperson for the environmental division of the prefectural government, told Xinhua that about 70 percent of all shops operated in the area would take part in the scheme instituted for the first time in Kansai's prefecture, also expecting that more than 80 percent of local shoppers will in advance carry shopping bags by themselves within years.

Plastic shopping bags are currently available free of charge in most parts of the country.
