30 killed, 150 feared trapped in W. India landslide

The death toll in Wednesday's landslide, triggered by heavy rains, in a remote village in the western state of Maharashtra has reached 30 while 150 others are still feared buried under the mud, Indian authorities said on Thursday.

"So far, 30 bodies have been recovered while 10 people, including a woman and a child, have been pulled out by rescuers alive. The death toll may go up as we suspect that 150 people could be trapped in the mud and slush in Malin village near the state's Pune town," a senior police official said.
The landslide hit some 40 homes in the village, leaving only mud, slush and debris, when people were sleeping on Wednesday. Some media reports said that part of a mountain had fallen on the village.
"At least 44 houses were washed away. About 158 people were residing in these houses. Maharashtra government will support the residents of Malin village," said state Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan who visited the site this morning.
Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh also visited the affected area and took stock of the situation there in the morning, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condoled the loss of lives in the natural calamity.
Landslides are common in many parts of India during the monsoon, from June to September.
