Top Chinese leaders Wednesday evening attended a tea party with
ethnic minority deputies to the on-going First Session of the 10th
National People's Congress (NPC) and members of the 10th National
Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
(CPPCC).
Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Li Peng, Li Lanqing, Wu Bangguo, Wen
Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li
Changchun and Luo Gan attended the gathering, which was held at the
Great Hall of the People.
The NPC, China's top legislature, and the CPPCC, a top advisory
body, house representatives from all 56 ethnic groups in China. The
10th NPC has 415 deputies from minority groups, or 14 percent of
the total, while the CPPCC has 262, or 11.7 percent of the
total.
The proportion of deputies and members of ethnic minority groups at
the 10th NPC and CPPCC, both higher than the proportion of their
population among China's total population, shows the ethnic policy
of the CPC and the unity among different ethnic groups.
Artistic performances were staged at the gathering.
