Carlos Moya has made an early exit at the China Open after losing to Jo-Wilfred Tsonga of France in the opening match.

The Spaniard was defeated by the French qualifier 6-3, 6-3 in 50 minutes on Wednesday night.

Earlier in the day, his compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero thrashed American Justin Gimelstob in straight sets to reach the second round of the tournament in Beijing.

The Spanish second seed, who has struggled with injury all year, overcame three rain delays in the first set to advance to the last 16 of the $500,000 tournament.

Also advancing to the second round is Asian number one Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, who survived an erratic second set to beat Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-4, 7-5.

After a light schedule on Monday and a near-total rainout on Tuesday, the 32-man event is pressed for time with No 3 Argentine David Nalbandian and fifth seed Marat Safin of Russia yet to play.
